Erosion is a loss of tooth hard substance due to acid action (in the absence of bacteria or their lactic acid). A repeated acid attacks can lead to the loss of tooth surface (enamel) and in the advanced stage to the loss of tooth bone (dentin). Erosions can be cause for example, by the regurgitation of stomach acid, as is the case with nocturnal, often unnoticed reflux. Also acidic foodstuffs, acidic drinks (soft drinks, fruit juices, iced tea, etc.), medicines (aspirin, vitamin C supplements, etc.) and frequent vomiting caused by binge eating (bulimia) can also cause erosions.
Mild erosions, where only the enamel is affected, are often unnoticed.
They do not cause any discomfort and the tooth colour is unchanged. In advanced stages, the underlying dentin is affected. Temperature sensitivity and discolouration may occur.
Nowadays, minimally invasive treatment methods (tooth-friendly) with composite (white filling material) or veneers/inlays/onlays (ceramic) are used to reconstruct the affected teeth. The treatment planning is always conducted in close cooperation with a gastroenterologist.
